Reader’s Question:

I am interested in knowing SR22 requirements for Washington state since I will be moving sooner to Seattle, Washington and I still have SR22 which will still be with me after 2 years more.

Danny

Seattle, Washington WA

First of all, in case you do not know yet, not all auto insurance company sell SR22 insurance in Washington. SR22 requirement for Washington can be met in two ways: owner or non-owner. So what’s the difference between these two SR22 insurance policies? The non-owner SR22 policy or broad-form SR22 policy will release the license if there is no car to cover by the insured, or if there is already insurance in place. The premiums in more urban parts like Seattle could a bit higher, so a broad form SR22 is usually best.

This type of policy runs 12 months in length, and is typically $300-$600 per year in Seattle, WA. The nice part about this type written alongside a regular policy on the insured’s car is the discretion. There is no communication necessary between the insured and his/her regular insurance company regarding the non-owner or broad-form SR22 purchased through some companies in Seattle. The State of Washington requires for SR22 to be temporary, usually running from two to three years. Therefore, paying a bit extra for an additional policy should pay off in the long run, and is certainly the most convenient way to fulfill the requirement in Washington WA.

Auto Insurance Coverage Seattle WA

Reader’s Question:

I am giving permission to my brother use my vehicle until he gets a new car. The car will stay registered to me in Seattle but can he use his own auto insurance to cover him driving my car?

Gene

Seattle, WA

For most insurance providers your brother would not be able to transfer his insurance coverage to your car because he had no insurable interest in the car. We have one insurance provider that will permit your brother to purchase coverage on your car as long as you are listed on the auto insurance policy.

There are some insurers in Seattle that do not require the car owner to be the policy holder or be on the policy as a motorist.

I suggest that you continue to insure the car on your auto insurance policy with your brother listed as a motorist on the policy. Additionally, you should inform your auto insurance agent that your brother will be driving the vehicle on a regular basis. If your brother wants to purchase an insurance policy, I suggest that you are listed on that policy.

Reader’s Question:

What is and SR-22? When should a driver carry an SR-22 as well?

Jim

Seattle, WA

Hi there, Jim.

Regardless of where you live in the U.S., you are required by law to have auto insurance in your vehicle wherever you go. For high risk drivers however, SR-22 is required too.

To answer your question, SR-22 is a form that proves you have auto insurance and is a requirement by state laws for drivers who are a high risk. I can give you a few reasons why you might need to have an SR-22 form. You are required to carry SR-22 if you’ve been convicted of DUI (driving under the influence/drunk driving), you have a lot of highway moving infraction points in a short period of time, you’ve been labeled as a habitual traffic offender, and you’ve caused an accident and you didn’t have any insurance.

Remember too that high risk offenders of moving violations and collisions are required to have SR-22 insurance and an SR-22 form with their insurance information. These regulations regarding SR-22 drivers vary from one state to another but most commonly, high-risk drivers have to carry SR-22 insurance for at least three years.
For one who is required to carry an SR-22 form, it might be difficult to find insurance from an insurance company for your vehicle. Still, there are more insurance companies who are now willing to sell insurance to high risk drivers who have an SR-22 status.

Hello there, Dindo.

You are actually asking about legalities of going without any auto insurance and driving around in Washington. I know that many people might think that going without car insurance is something that they can do. Most often than not, people do not get auto insurance because they do not want to pay for it. In your case, since it is your schedule that’s hindering you, it cannot be any different when it comes to encountering some risks on the road since it will be more expensive if you get into a car accident. I think you better prioritize your auto insurance in Seattle for now.

I just want you to know that driving without auto insurance is more stressful for me than anything. I know for a fact that there will be many more costs that you will have to pay if you encounter any accident while you are driving without auto insurance in Seattle. You will not only burden for your own damages but also for the other car as well – regardless of who is at fault.

Aside from that, you will be breaking the law of Seattle Washington since you drive your car without the right type of insurance for your car. I hope you call a local auto insurance agent in Seattle so you can get one. You can also spend at least 15 minutes of your time online to start shopping for free quotes.
